The Engineering Academy
at Hoover High School
We recently asked our 10th - 12th grade engineering several questions about their experiences in The Engineering Academy and what they would say to prospective students. Here are some of their responses.
On a scale of 0 - 5, how much would you say being in the EA has helped you in your ______ classes?
Math 3.7 / 5 Science 3.7 / 5 English 3.5 / 5
What would you say has been the most valuable part of being in the EA?
"Learning how to communicate idea effectively has been the most valuable part of EA for me so far. Being able to tell others my ideas and findings in a convincing manner helps me consistently in day to day life."
"The Engineering Academy makes a small community of people with common interests. It makes you feel like you have a small family inside of a large high school."
"The availability of the instructors to help you with what you need."
"The teachers are the most valuable part of EA because they care about you and want to see you succeed. They will push you, but that is because they want you to be the best you can be."
"Gaining confidence in myself as a student"
If a prospective student asked you why they should join the EA, what would you tell them?
"Great hands on learning coupled with a curriculum that doesn't contain busy-work."
"It's a great opportunity to learn about all kinds of engineering and the science and math behind it."
"In the Engineering Academy, you learn different ways to approach math and science in a more understandable way."
"EA teaches you more than just engineering and makes you a better student."
What do you wish you had known about the EA before you started?
"I started a year late, and I wish I had known about the type of learning, and bias towards action so I would have started in 9th grade."
"I wish that I had known that essentially what you put in is what you get out."
"Don't be afraid to not get a 100 on everything. And don't be afraid of work."
"That the classes are a big jump from each grade and it's normal to feel frustrated."
"I wish that I would have known about how much benefit it would be for me in the future so as not to worry about my course load."
